Blood Donor Program

Want to help save a life & earn credit towards your vet bill?

Maybe your pet can be a blood donor!

To be a blood donor, dogs must be:

  • In good general health
  • Between the age of 1 – 6 years
  • Weigh 50 pounds or more
  • Kept up to date on basic vaccines and heartworm tests/preventative
  • Socialized and non-aggressive for handling or blood draws

To be considered and blood typed for our donor program, your dog must be evaluated by one of the technicians on the donor committee. Clients from our satellite hospitals are welcome to participate as well, though collections are only done at the Romeo and Sterling Heights office.

Cats have 3 blood types, and about 98% of cats in this area are the same blood type. Cats most often need brief anesthesia in order to donate - therefore our cat donor list is almost exclusively employee pets. However, there are some rare cats who will sit perfectly still for the 5 minutes it takes the draw the blood. Cat collections are only done at the Romeo office. Cats who are exceptionally calm and agreeable can be considered to be awake donors.
Cat donor requirements:

  • Between 1 – 7 years old
  • Have no major health problems
  • Weigh 10 pounds or more
  • Indoor only (not exposed to unvaccinated cats or strays.)
  • Able to sit still for several minutes and be non-reactive to blood draws

Benefits for all active donors include:

  • Free yearly heartworm tests and well pet exams
  • Free nails trims or tech service at time of donation
  • Credit towards current or future vet bills
  • Treats for the donor
  • And most importantly – KNOWING YOUR PET MAY SAVE A LIFE!

If you are interested in having your pet participate in our blood donor program, please contact one of the blood bank technicians to discuss the program and set up an appointment with one of us for evaluation.
